More hospitality apprenticeship standards in development

After approving two standards for chef apprenticeships in August, the government has now announced the development of three new hospitality apprenticeship standards for commis chefs, chefs de partie and hospitality team members as part of phase three of the apprenticeship trailblazer programme.

The trailblazer programme, led by Hilton Worldwide and managed by People 1st, is invaluable to the industry with Annette Allmark, director of strategic policy at People 1st noting: “The standards are employer driven and provide the industry with a fantastic opportunity to engage, train and develop highly skilled apprentices.”

Whitbread, Mitchells and Butlers, Spirit Pub Company and Compass Group amongst others have already contributed to the apprenticeship reform with Kathyrn Porter, Chair of the hospitality trailblazer and divisional resourcing director, Hilton Worldwide telling Big Hospitality : “The trailblazer work is important to all employers as we are defining a standard for job roles and agreeing what great performance looks like. It’s essential that the standards and the apprenticeship assessment meet the needs of all types and sizes of employers.”

The Big Hospitality article also notes the brilliant work that has been achieved already and stresses the importance that the standards holds asĀ Sandra Warren, head of education at Compass Group says: “Developing talent through apprenticeships has already achieved great results for Compass, so it’s essential to our business that we input into the new standards so they are firmly based on developing the skills and knowledge which will enable apprentices to prosper in the industry.”
