GCSE Results

With thousands receiving their GCSE results yesterday, what opportunities are on offer? Especially if young people don’t fancy being stuck in a classroom anymore?

The hospitality industry is offering a huge range of apprenticeships. These give young people the chance to get their foot on the career ladder, learn a wealth of transferable skills, whilst also earning money.

The industry has a long tradition of recruiting and developing apprentices. Since 2010, the number of people completing an apprenticeship in the sector has risen by 23% – from 29,000 to 35,590 to 2013.

And just this week, Punch Taverns, one of the country’s biggest pub companies, announced that 180 of their pubs have got involved with the company’s apprenticeship programme, with 42 licensees having taken on new apprentices.

The Punch Taverns’ apprenticeship programme, like others, offers licensees the potential of a £1,500 government grant towards employing an apprentice, and the opportunity to ‘try before you hire’ with a two-week no obligation placement.

Punch has been running the scheme with Charnwood Training group since June 2013. Punch HR director Jackie Burn said, “We are passionate about supporting our licensees and encouraging them to consider the value that a new apprentice could add to their business.”

The hospitality industry is also offering trailblazing new apprenticeships in partnership with the Department of Business, Innovation & Skills that are based on new standards and assessment approaches which have been designed by employers. Spirit Pub Company; Mitchells & Butlers and Whitbread are all offering the ‘new look’ apprenticeships.
