Roxann’s Inside Story

Roxann

Anthony Pender, vice-chairman of the Perceptions Group and managing director of The Yummy Pub Company has trained a number of young people on the Pub & Bar Careers programme.

“It is a unique opportunity for young people to see if it is the right choice for them, at the very least they walk away with two national qualifications but for those who are excited about the chance to work in an industry that is ripe with opportunity and choice you can truly excel.“

Its not unusual to find people who have started at the bar now running their own business, or businesses. “There really is no bounds if you have the drive and ambition. There are so many routes you can take, each equipping you with vital business skills along the way,” added Anthony.

Roxann Richards, 25yrs, was homeless and living in sheltered accommodation. She was passionate about hospitality, but she didn’t know where to start – New Horizons Youth Centre who had helped her with accommodation, suggested the local pub, Somers Town Coffee House, who were running the programme.

“The opportunity I was given has changed my life. I had low self-esteem, lacked in confidence and saw little hope for the future.”  Now, less than a year later Roxann is a confident, bubbly supervisor that has customers eating out of her hand.

“I feel my true personality now shines through in everything I do.  The responsibility I have been given managing the Ssshh Super Club & events rooms at the bar was my first taste of career progression and real responsibility. I’m accountable for generating and supervising the business of the rooms along with the staff on the day or evening.”

The role has enabled the flexibility for Roxann to continue to develop as she is currently studying for a Hospitality Services apprenticeship. Her next step is a Hospitality Management apprenticeship which will enable her to pursue her dream of running her own bar or hotel.

“My passion is to make sure every customer walks away having had a fantastic experience. I learn more with every shift and progress my career every single day.”

Roxann’s top tip for young people that want to join the hospitality business:

“Be super friendly; have a smile for everyone; love everything you do and remember that customers service is what hospitality is all about.”

Roxanne had a job.  She now has a career.  One that will enable her to live her dream.  Her skills learnt? Level 2 qualifications; a NVQ and a technical certificate; functional skills; and knowledge of her rights and responsibilities.
