Two major employers in the sector have shown their commitment to training and recruitment ahead of the launch of National Apprenticeship Week, which starts on Monday.

SSP, the travel food and beverage operator, has revealed it is recruiting 800 apprentices in 2014. The company is launching the first UK training programme in M&S Simply Food stores where staff will have the change to get on the job training and work towards an NVQ.

Christine Holland, national apprenticeship manager SSP UK & Ireland, said: “The launch of our new traineeship programme outlines our commitment to bringing more young people into the hospitality industry.

“We need talented people who share our passion and enthusiasm for delivering great customer service.”

Meanwhile, T.G.I. Friday’s has unveiled the details of its Academy of Excellence. The new centre, based in Luton, will run a training programme that will offer tailored courses to develop and progress team members within the company.

A new recruitment drive will see the company hold 12 ‘talent showcases’ over the course of a year to employ site managers and staff.

Jacqui McManus, director of culture and people development at T.G.I. Friday’s, said:  “From master bar classes, to management knowledge, the Academy is a way for people of all backgrounds and levels of experience to progress their careers – with the T.G.I. Friday’s culture at the heart of all our training.”
